The Minnesota legislative session will begin in three weeks. Also, the state senate will try to legalize sports betting in the upcoming session. Although the bill has bipartisan support, they failed to pass it in the previous years.
According to gambling and sports news reports, Minnesota’s neighboring states are among the more than 30 states that have legalized sports betting. In recent years, it has been challenging for sports betting measures in Minnesota’s legislature to pass.
Former Senate majority leader and Winona Republican Jeremy Miller plans to present a measure legalizing sports betting on the opening day of the current legislative session.
Minnesota Sports Betting in the Upcoming Session
The state of Minnesota grants exclusive gaming privileges to aboriginal tribes. According to Miller’s proposal, the tribes could maintain their exclusive rights in the mobile phone and casino industries. The proposed bill will also allow the tribes to partner with Running Aces and Canterbury Park to facilitate sports betting. Thus, sports betting software technology suppliers can start offering their services in the state.
As a condition, the indigenous communities would need to endorse efforts to reverse modifications made to electronic pull tabs. According to bookie pay per head solutions experts, tribes voiced concerns that the games resembled casinos far too much. Thus, lawmakers approved the banning of the games during the previous session. But that made the nonprofits who rely on pull tabs very upset.
Miller said it is feasible for a measure to pass with backing from both Republicans and Democrats, but not all Republicans are in favor of a sports betting bill.
There has always been some confusion over how exactly to tax sports betting. Under Miller’s plan, a 15 percent tax would be imposed on sports betting. He estimates a yearly revenue of $60 million. Half of the funds would go to the administration of pull-tab operations. In contrast, the other half would be distributed among Minnesota Sports and Events, a new entity aimed at attracting significant events to Minnesota. Some funds would also go to youth sports and initiatives to combat compulsive gambling.
